O Kesava! O Lord of the universe! O Lord Hari, who have assumed the form of a boar! All glories to You! The earth, which had become submerged in the Garbhodaka Ocean at the bottom of the universe, sits fixed upon the tip of Your tusk like a spot upon the moon.

Seeing the earth lying at the bottom of the Garbhodaka ocean and understanding that only the Supreme personality of Godhead can rectify the situation, all the demigods headed by Lord Brahma prayed for the mercy of the Lord. Desiring to bestow auspiciousness and fulfill the desire of his devotees, the demigods, Lord Varaha appeared from the nostrils of Lord Brahma and proceeded towards the lower regions of the universe where he took the planet earth from the bottom of the Garbhodaka ocean and placing her on his tusks, brought her out of the ocean. While thus rescuing mother earth, he was challenged by the demoniac son of Diti, Hiranyaksha, who was maddened by his extraordinary strength and victory over all the demigods. Despite the abusive language used by the demon, Lord Varaha patiently tolerated his words till he placed the earth on the surface of the ocean and invested within her the power to remain afloat. He then accepted the challenge of Hiranyaksha, and a fierce duel began between the two. Although capable of killing him straight away, the Lord, the enjoyer of all transcendental mellows, desired to enjoy the mellow of chivalry and thus engaged in combat with Hiranyaksha, who was actually one of the Lords eternal servants and became a demon by the desire of the Lord and through the medium of the curse of the four Kumaras, for who but a devotee of the Lord is even capable of fighting with him and thus fulfilling his desire to taste the mellow of chivalry. The fight ensued for a long time and both the Lord and the demon were dealt heavy blows from each others maces. To see the wonderful fight of the Lord, all the demigods gathered there in their celestial airplanes and looked on with great wonder. Seeing the unending fierce fighting, Lord Brahma petitioned the Lord to kindly kill the demon immediately without delaying any longer. Understanding the hearts of his devotees, Varaha dev then killed the great demon Hiranyaksha and gave immense pleasure to all the assembled demigods and sages.
